Transitions – a quote that I’ve heard is, “The only constant in life is Change.” Each day, all of us experience some change; it’s inevitable. We also walk through life (or drive) and experience constant transitions.

In architecture, some of the best buildings in the world, are those that give a person the experience of ‘transitioning’ from the outside to the inside seamlessly. While walking to a building, the far-a-way outline might be pleasing against the sky. As you get closer, you notice edges, materials, plantings, stairs, windows and doors. Closer still, is the entrance inviting, pulling you in? Going in, is it fun to ‘ go through the wall?’ Once in, does the interior interest you, or take your breath away?

Humans need these designed transitions, but our great teacher is Nature. We as a species know we need a way to get from here to there comfortably and logically; think about the edge of a forest – grass, flowers, small plants, bushes, small trees, mid-sized trees, and the canopy trees – a beautiful, natural transition, pulling you in!
